the musculoskeletal system Flashcards
acromion
the distal end of the spine of the scapula. forms a synovial joint with the distal clavicle and provides attachment for the caracoacromial ligament and deltoid muscle
anterior nasal (piriform) aperature
the front opening of the bony nasal cavity of the skull
atlas (C1)
the first cervical vertebra
axis (C2)
the second cervical vertebra
cervical vertebrae
region of the vertebral column formed by seven vertebrae. the upper two in order are named atlas and axis.
clavicles
the paired bones forming the anterior parts of each shoulder girdle. forms struts, which allow the scapulate to move around the thoracic cage
coccyx
the terminal part of the vertebral column. it is a vestigial tail with only four or five segments
costal cartilage
bars of the hyaline cartilage that attach to the anterior ends of the ribs. cartilages 1-7 connect directly to the sternum, 8-10 articulate with the cartilage above, 11-12 have no connection with the sternum at all
false ribs
pairs 8-10, have only an indirect connection with the sternum
floating ribs
pairs 11-12, have no connection with the sternum, either directly or indirectly
frontal bone
bone underlying the forehead
humerus
bone of the upper arm
ilium
one of the three component bones of the hip. it has a flared crest or wing superiorly and a body inferiorly
lower teeth
in an adult, each side has two incisors, one canine, two premolars, and three molars
lumber vertebra
vertebrae of lower back. each has a large body; short, thick laminae; and pedicles and mammillary processes extending backward from the superior articular process
mandible
the bone of the lower jaw. it has an alveolar margin to support the teeth, paired condylar processes for articulation with the temporal bone, and paired coronoid processes
maxilla
the bone of the medial cheek. it contributes to the inferior margin of the orbit and support of the upper teeth
occipital bone
the large bone on the underside of the skull. it provides attachment for the post vertebral muscles of the neck and bears occipital condyles for articulation with the atlas
orbit
the bony cavity containing the eye, lacrimal gland, extraocular muscles, nerves, vessels and orbital fat. bounded by the maxilla, frontal, sphenoid, ethmoid, and lacrimal bones
