The muscular system Flashcards
Basic function of muscle
Provides motor power for all movements and functions of the body parts.
Ability to contract actively to provide the force for movement and function
of the body.
They act both voluntary and involuntary
Acts as the framework for the entire body.
3 different types of Muscle
Smooth muscle
Skeletal muscle
Cardiac muscle
Function of smooth muscle
Form the soft body organs like stomach,
intestine – your digestive systems as well as blood vessels,
urinary and reproductive systems.
Is categorised as involuntary, part of the autonomic nervous
system.
They do not have any striation in contrast to the
other two types of muscles.
Function of skeletal muscle
Creates movement in the body – this
movement is possible due to the skeletal muscle crossing over
joints and attaching to bones via tendons.
There are more than 600 skeletal muscles, making up 40 percent
of the body weight.
When the nervous system signals the muscle to contract, groups
of muscles work together to move the skeleton.
Skeletal muscle is categorised within the Somatic Nervous system, which means
through conscious or voluntary control can they be moved.
Function of cardiac muscle
Categorised as involuntary muscle.
Found in the walls of the heart and creates
the steady, rhythmic pulsing that pumps blood and oxygen
through the body as well as creating electrical impulses that
produce the heart’s contractions.
This is controlled and functioned through the Sinoatrial Node (SAN) which is the
heart’s pacemaker.
The heart is set to contract 72 bpm through the activity of the
SAN and this rhythmic is called autorhythmic.
