Q

How does Christie originally present him and how does this correlate/contrast her portrayal of him in ‘TMORA’?

A

Originally retired detective to pursue career of private detection. Now retired from private practice too. So, he has acquired new status. Allows Christie to introduce dramatic irony with a humorous effect. Placed in retirement enters incognito- readers don’t recognise him from Sheppard’s description (‘foreigner’ CH 3) before they realise who he is.
His coy and modest entrance displays his unique personality (mix of comical and serious)- introduces mystery to his character allowing him to be intimidating.
