Neat in appearance, ( in ‘The mysterious affair at Styles’) ‘the neatness of his attire was almost incredible, a spec of dust would cause him more pain than a bullet.’ Has a desire for order in his appearance not simple vanity and this is a reflection of his passion for order in the rest of his life.

logical and method, with an orderly mind.
How does Christie originally present him and how does this correlate/contrast her portrayal of him in ‘TMORA’?
Originally retired detective to pursue career of private detection. Now retired from private practice too. So, he has acquired new status. Allows Christie to introduce dramatic irony with a humorous effect. Placed in retirement enters incognito- readers don’t recognise him from Sheppard’s description (‘foreigner’ CH 3) before they realise who he is.
His coy and modest entrance displays his unique personality (mix of comical and serious)- introduces mystery to his character allowing him to be intimidating.
