The Multiverse Objection Flashcards
Plenitudinous Multiverse
A universe that divides into many partitions and in which the partitions, vary independently with respect to the set of cosmic conditons that are in force.
The Multiverse Objection
1) The defense of premise (3) in the (FTA) assumed that there is exactly one set of cosmic conditions in force that has been selected as a matter of chance or brute fact. 2) But we do not have sufficient reason to believe that there is exactly one set of cosmic conditions in force that has been selected as a matter of chance or brute fact. 3) /:. So, we do not have sufficient reason to accept premise (3) in the FTA
Revised Conclusion
The existence of life permitting cosmic conditions counts as very strong evidence towards design theory or plenitudinous multiverse over a single cosmo, non design theory
Defense of premise (1)
We get the extremely improbable due to chance because we assumed that were was only one ‘draw’ to produce life-permitting cosmic conditions. We presupposed a universe instead of a multiverse.
Defense of premise (2)
2 Is a weak claim, it only says that we cannot rule it out. Don’t have sufficient reason to deny that were in a multiverse and there are both scientific/philosophical grounds for belief in multiverses.
Sketch of a defense for (3) in FTA
if the cosmic conditions are left to chance and the fine tuning claim is true, then it is extremely improbable that the cosmic conditions are life-permitting
