The Multi-store Model of Memory Flashcards
What are the features of the sensory register?
- All stimuli from the environment passes through the sensory register
- High capacity
- Information passes further into the memory system only if you pay attention to it
What was Sperling’s (1960) study on the sensory store?
- Participants saw a grid of digits for 50 milliseconds and they would either write down all 12 or hear a tone immediately after and would have to recall a particular row
- 42% recalled the whole thing (5 items)
- 75% recalled one row (3 items)
- Suggests the sensory memory cannot hold information for long and it rapidly decays in the sensory store, which supports the existence of the sensory store
What was Glazer and Cunitz’s (1966) study?
- Showed participants a list of 20 words and were asked to recall them (serial positional effect)
- Composed of primary and recency effect
What is primary effect?
The tendency to remember the first 5 words at the beginning of a list
What is recency effect?
The tendency for people to remember the last 5 words at the end of a list
How does Glanzer and Cunitz’s study support MSM?
- Primary effect occurs because the first words are best rehearsed and transferred to the LTM
- Recency effect occurs because the last words are presented so they are fresh and in STM at the start of recall
Who created the multi-store model of memory?
Atkinson and Shiffrin (1968)
What are the features of the multi-store model of memory?
Environmental stimuli - sensory register (forgotten or) attention - short term memory (forgotten if not rehearsed) consolidation - long term memory (forgotten) retrieval - short term memory
