Q

What is the coding for STM?

A

Mainly acoustic (by repeatedly saying a word)

sometimes visually (by thinking of the image of the word)

Q

What is the sensory register?

A

the SR is not under cognitive control, but is an automatic response to the reception of sensory information by the sense organs

all information contained within the LTM will have originally passed through the SR, through an unprocessed form

Q

What is the short term memory (STM)?

A

temporarily stores information received from the SR.

It is an active memory system, as it contains information currently being thought about

Q

What is the long term memory? (LTM)

A

involves storing information over lenthy periods of time, sometimes for a whole lifetime with information stored longer than 30 seconds counting as LTM

Q

What are the positive evaluation points for the multi-store model?

A
  • first cognitive explanation of memory and thus was influential, inspiring interest and research, and formed the basis for the WMM

– supported by amnesia cases. Patients either lose their LTM or the STM abilities, byt not both, supporting the idea that they are separate memory stores

Q

What are negative evaluation points for the multi-store model ?

A
  • the MSM is over simplified, as it assumes there are single STM and LTM stores. Research indicated several types of STM, like one for verbal and non-verbal sounds
  • Cohen believes memory capacity cannot be measures purely in terms of the amount of information, but rather by the nature of the information to be recalled
