The multi- store model Flashcards
1
Q
who developed the multi store model
A
Atkinson (1968)
Shiffrin (1971)
2
Q
what does the multi store model describe
A
- how information flows through the memory system
- suggest that memory is made up of three stores linked by processing
3
Q
what happens at the sensory receptor
A
- all stimuli form the environment passes into the sensory receptor
- has several receptors for the 5 senses
- has iconic and echoic coding
duration is less than a second
has a very high capacity - information is transferred if you pay attention
4
Q
what happens in the short term memory
A
- coded acoustically
- last 18 seconds (so temporary store )
- limited capacity of 7+ or - 2
maintenance rehearsal occurs when we rehearse material - if rehearsal is long enough information passes to the long term memory
5
Q
what happens in the long term memory
A
- permanent memory store
- coded semantically
duration of a lifetime - information transferred back into the STM by retrieval
6
Q
strength of multi store model
A
- reseach support
- Baddeley (1966) found that we mix up words that sound similar when we are using our STM but mix up words that have similar meaning when using LTM
7
Q
limitation of multi store model
A
- more than one STM store
Shallice and Warrington (1970) studies client KF who had amnesia
- KFs STM for digits was poor when they were read out to him but recall was much better when he read the digits himself
- further studies showed there could be another STM store for non verbal sounds
2.elaborate rehearsal
- prolonged rehearsal is not needed for transfer to LTM
- Criak and Watkins (1973) found that the type of rehearsal is more important than the amount
- elaborate rehearsal is needed for long- term storage (linking inforamtion to exisating knowledge)
