The Modern Periodic Table Flashcards
What is the modern periodic table based on?
Electronic structure
Once subatomic particles were discovered, what change in the periodic table?
The elements were then ordered by atomic number and all elements were put into groups
Using the electron arrangement, you can predict the element’s…
chemical properties
Electrons in an atom are set out in [ ] which each correspond to an [ ] level
Shells
Energy`
Apart from transition metals, elements in the same group have the [ ] in their highest occupied energy level
same number of electrons
The group number is equal to…
… the number of electrons in the highest occupied energy level.
The further from the nucleus the electron is, the [ ] the attraction
less
What is shielding?
Where the attraction of the nucleus is even less when there are a lot of inner electrons. Inner electrons ‘get in the way’ of the nuclear charge, reducing the attraction.
The combination of increased distance and shielding means that an electron in a higher energy level is [ ] easily lost because there’s [ ] attraction from the [ ] holding it in place. For the same reason, it is [ ] to gain electrons (less attraction)

Group 1 metals get [ ] as you go down the group

[ ] get less reactive going down the group
