DEF: Mission
A task and purpose that clearly indicate the action to be taken and the reason for the action. In common usage, especially when applied to lower military units, a mission is a duty or task to an individual or unit.
What are the 5 steps that leaders take to analyze their assigned mission?
- Higher headquarters (Two levels up) mission, intent, and concept
- Higher headquarters (One level up) mission, intent and concept
- Unit’s purpose
- Constraints (METT-TC)
- Specified, implied, and essential tasks
DEF: Specified Task
Tasks that are specifically assigned to the unit
DEF: Implied Task
Tasks that must be performed to accomplish a specified task
DEF: Essential Task
Task that is a Tactical Mission Task. It will accomplish the mission. (EX: Destroy, delay etc.)
5 elements to a mission statement
- Who (The unit)
- What (The unit’s essential task and type of operation)
- When (This is the time given in the battalion OPORD)
- Where (The objective or location stated in higher’s OPORD)
- Why (The company’s purpose - taken from higher’s Concept of Operation)
DEF: Decisive Point
A geographic place, specific key event, critical factor, or function that, when acted upon, allows commanders to gain a marked advantage over an advisory or contribute materially to achieving success.
