The mind and body connection Flashcards
What is the mind body connection
The theory that our thoughts, feelings, beliefs, and attitudes can positively or negatively affect our biological functioning
Don’t need to know these but, it helps
The link between the physical and the psychological
People have a hard time letting go of their suffering. Out of a fear of the unknown, they prefer suffering that is familiar.Thich Nhat Hanh

What are Mind-Body Techniques?
Techniques designed to enhance the mind’s positive impact on the body
Mind-body techniques include: focused breathing, relaxation, imagery and meditation
Goals of Exercise Training
Goals: Alleviate symptoms (↓ sensation of dyspnea)
Functional exercise capacity (6 MWT is often used pre and post Rehab to measure functional change)
Enhance overall quality of life
What are some things that we do as PT’s or check when doing exercise in Acute Care think like vital sings secrection clearance etc..
Sequence Checklist:
Secretion clearance
Self treatment for SC (Acapella? ACBT?)
CBT at rest + Recovery from SOB positions
CBT standing/MIP (Vital Signs monitoring)
CBT ambulating with oxygen (Vital Signs)
CBT on stairs (Vital Signs) (step to step ) exhale on exertion
Dyspnea Relief what are some things that you can do to help relieve SOB
Avoidance of breath holding and Valsalva
Instruction in Pursed Lip Breathing (PLB)
Avoidance of unnecessary speech during effort
Instruction in dyspnea relieving postures (leaning forward with UE support).
Instruction in recovery from SOB
Dealing with SOB Exacerbations
What is one Thing you for sure want to do???
STOP ACTIVITY Find a comfortable position Use PLB and diaphragmatic breathing Do not inhale through the mouth Breathe initially at whatever speed needed to regain control gradually slow rate of breathing
What are some exercises that you do in acute care???
Think like sit to stands squats what about for aerobic capacites
Aerobic Exercise (Endurance Training) Restorator Repetitive arm or leg exercises (windshield wipers, seated MIP) Hall walking – use Floor Map as an exercise log Strength Training Modified Squats or Sit to stand Weights Theraband
Sit to stands
Leg press
Arm bike
Alternating arms and legs
Pulmonary Exercise stretngth training guidelines
Strength Training: Start with Unilateral active movement, (other arm stabilized to assist breathing) Coordinate breathing with movement Progress to light weights/Theraband Begin with a small # of reps
Inspiratory Muscle Training what is used to do this???
sIMT exercises inpiratory mm by gradually adding resistance to the inspiratory effort.
Resistance applied
is a percentage of maximum inspiratory pressure measured
at the mouth.
Out – Patient Pulmonary Rehab how long does the physical therapy sessions typically last?????
Most programs last 6 – 12 weeks, 2 - 3 times/wk
Usual Components:
Exercise (Do warm up stretching pre ex and cool down walk/stretching post ex)
Aerobic exercise for endurance
Weight lifting for strength
Education
Psychosocial Support/Behavior Modification
Give me some PNF techniques can can be they be done in supine and in seating??
D1/D2 UE Flexion/Extension
Swimming
Can be performed in seated, supine, or sidelying
