efficient transport - economic & social
through the building of steamships it was safer and easier for Scots to emigrate abroad, for example by 1914 took 1 week to get across Atlantic to North America from Scotland making it easier to travel abroad (1830s it took 6 weeks)
gold rush - economic
in 1851 lots of poor Scottish men went to Australia for the gold rush. gold was extremely profitable therefore the poor would be inclined to move elsewhere to find gold and sell it for profit
help from UK gov - economic & political
government help provided through 1922 Empire settlement act. loans and grants given to facilitate the resettlement of Scots abroad (arguably to colonise the empire)
foreign agents recruited Scots - economic & political
in 1892 Canadian gov appointed agents to travel around Scotland and persuade Scots to emigrate to Canada. did this by lecturing in town halls and agricultural shows
emigration societies - economic & political
the highlands and islands emigration society helped poor Scots migrate elsewhere in the empire by raising money to financially assist their leave
encouraged by family and friends - social
1858 first transatlantic telegraph cable laid across Atlantic. the ability to send telegraphs sped up communication from abroad to Scotland encouraging Scots to emigrate elsewhere as the Scots learnt of better lifestyles and job opportunities
prison transportation - social culture & political
up to 1867 Australia was used to send convicted British criminals to do labour intensive work as punishment for their crime. many settled in Australia after their release as it was a nicer place than Scotland.
spread Christianity - culture
some Scots would migrate to spread christianity on a global scale as they are passionate christians
for example David Livingstone who operated in South Africa between 1847-1872
