The Microbiome Flashcards
What is the microbiome?
The genetic material of all the microbes - bacteria, fungi, protozoa and viruses - that live, on and inside an animal.
Microbiome likely outnumbers host cells (especially ruminants)
NOT all bad!!
Where and why do ruminants have huge microbiome
rumen filled with important bacteria to degrade cellulose
List things that are classes as microbes in the rumen
- BActeria
- Archaea
- Protozoa
- Fungi
- Viruses
What is metagenomics
enables the study of all microorganisms, regardless of whether they can be cultured or not, through the analysis of genomic data
What are microbiomics
a fast-growing field in which all the microorganisms of a given community are investigated together.
How many techniques are used in microbiomics/ metagenomics?
Range of techniques: don’t need to know the exact methods
NAme the approaches to microbiomics/ metagenomics
- 16S profiling
- MEtagenomics
- Metatranscriptomics
- Metaproteomics
- Metametabolomics
