The menstrual cycle Flashcards
What is the first phase of the menstrual cycle?
Follicular phase
What is another name for the follicular phase of menstruation?
Proliferative
Follicle maturation is brought about by what hormone?
FSH
The FSH has what effect upon this cohort of follicles?
Granulosa cell proliferation + aromatase activity
Which cells produce androgen precursors?
Theca cells
Which cells convert androgens to oestrogen?
Granulosa cells
At what point does the Graafian follicle become apparent?
Days 5-7
What is the length of a ‘normal’ cycle?
25-35 days
When is menarche considered delayed?
Should it not occur until beyond 16 years
What are the causes of delayed menarche?
- Imperforate hymen (causing haematocolpos)
- Vaginal atrophy
- Testicular feminisation
- Pituitary/hypothalamus failure
- Gonadal dysgenesis
- Turner’s syndrome
What brings about suppression of FSH in the follicular phase?
High oestrogen + inhibin levels. FSH suppression prevents further follicular recruitment
When does the LH surge occur?
During the ovulatory phase
What is the result of the LH surge?
Ovulation - release of the oocyte from the Graafian follicle
In what phase is the corpus luteum formed?
The luteal phase
What occurs following the luteal phase?
The menstrual (ischaemic) phase
