The Menstrual Cycle Flashcards
The monthly discharge of blood or menses from the uterus via the vagina
Menstruation
The menstrual period or time of menstruating usually lasts for about
five days.
The average menstrual cycle for an adult female is
28 days.
There is a natural variation in the length of the menstrual cycle. What are these 3 factors thatt affect the cycle?
Stress, tiredness, unbalanced diet
As the female ages, the ovaries will eventually stop refreshing eggs and the menstrual cycle will stop. This is called?
Menopause
Changes in a follicle during the menstrual cycle
The ovaries contain many developing follicles. What are they?
- Primary Follicles
- Graafian Follicles
- Ovulation
- Corpus Luteum
- Corpus Luteum breaks down
Changes in a follicle during the menstrual cycle
consists of a potential egg cell surrounded by a layer of smaller cells known as follicle cells.
Primary Follicle
- contains egg surrounded by follicle cells and a fluid-filled space.
- The egg has a haploid number of chromosomes.
Graafian follicle.
Changes in a follicle during the menstrual cycle
On day 14 of a 28-day cycle, the Graafian follicle ruptures and releases the egg into the oviduct through the funnel like opening. The release of the egg is called what?
Ovulation
STAGES IN THE MENSTRUAL CYCLE
What do the the follicles in the ovaries and the corpus luteum secrete?
Hormones
- The uterine lining breaks down and flows from the uterus out of the body through the vagina.
- The pituitary gland secretes follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) into the bloodstream.
STAGES IN THE MENSTRUAL CYCLE
MENSTRUAL FLOW STAGE (Day 1-5)
STAGES IN THE MENSTRUAL CYCLE
FOLLICLE STAGE (Day 6-13)
- FSH stimulates the development of the follicle in one of the ovaries during menstrual cycle.
- It stimulates the follicles in the ovaries to secrete estrogen
OVULATION
(Day 14)
- It also causes the formation of the corpus luteum from the remains of follicle
- The corpus luteum secretes progesterone and some estrogen
- It maintains the uterine lining by causing it to thicken further and be richly supplied with blood capillaries, preparing it for the implantation of the embryo.
- It inhibits ovulation
- It also inhibits FSH production.
CORPUS LUTEUM STAGE
(Day 15-28)
A menstrual cycle that’s too long (– days or more), too short (less than — days), irregular or absent can mean that you’re not ovulating. There might be no other signs or symptoms.
35 days, 21 days
