The human Brain & Spinal Cord Flashcards
Forebrain functions
Concerned with intelligence, memory, learning, sensations, and overall control of all voluntary actions.
Midbrain functions
Concerned with sight and visual reflexes, e.g. movement of the eyeballs.
also plays an important role in motor movement, pain, and the sleep/wake cycle.
Hindbrain functions
Controls coordination especially in balance, and also involuntary actions such as your heartbeat and more.
Long, thin, tubular structure that is made up of nervous tissue. It passes through the vertebral column (backbone)
Spinal Cord
Consists mostly of the cell bodies of neurones. it forms the outer layers of the brain and the central parts of the spinal cord
Grey Matter
Consists mainly of nerve fibers. it forms the central parts of the brain and the outer layers of the spinal cord
White matter
Contains fluid called cerebrospinal that brings nutrients to the spinal cord
Central Canal
The ___ contains only the nerve fibers of sensory neurones that transmit impulses to the spinal cord
Dorsal Root
Is a small swelling in the dorsal root thet contains cell bodies of sensory neurones
Dorsal root ganglion
It contains only the nerve fibers of motor neurones that transmit impulses from the spinal cord
Ventral Root
The dorsal root and the ventral root join to form the ____ . it contains both sensory and motor neurones hence its a “mixed” nerve
Spinal Nerve
The core section of a neuron
Cell body
