The Menstrual Cycle Flashcards
What days of the menstrual cycle does Menstruation take place?
Days 1-5
What happens in Menstruation?
The endometrium sheds down to the basal layer of the uterus
What happens in the Proliferative phase in the Menstrual Cycle?
The endometrium thickens
What influences the thickening of the endometrium?
Graafian Follicle
What days of the Menstrual Cycle does the proliferative phase happen?
Day 6-15
When does the secretory phase occur?
Day 16-28
What happens during the secretory phase?
The endometrium becomes more vascular under the influence of oestrogen and progesterone from the corpus luteum
What does the hypothalamus produce?
Gonadotrophin releasing hormone (GnRH)
When does the hypothalamus produce GnRH?
As a response to low levels of oestrogen and progesterone
What do rising levels of GnRH do?
Stimulate the anterior lobe of the pituitary gland to secrete follicle stimulating hormone (FSH)
What does FSH do?
Controls the growth and maturity of the secondary follicle in the ovary
What hormone initiates ovulation?
The luteinising hormone (LH)
When LH is produced what happens?
The Graafian follicle ruptures to release the ovum and cells form the corpus luteum
