What is the vow of poverty?
This vow was about giving up ones material possessions and allowing god to provide.
What were the vows that monks took?
The vows of poverty, chastity and obedience.
What is meant by the vow of chastity?
This meant that you could never get married or have children, you had to stay single.
What is meant by the vow of obedience?
This was a promise to obey the church and the monastery.
What was the chapter house?
A large room where all the monks or nuns gathered once a day to be assigned tasks, to hear news, and to express sorrow for the things they had done wrong and be given a penance to make up for it.
What were the cloisters?
A walkway around a square or rectangular space where monks or nuns walked and either meditated or said private prayer.
What was the dormitory?
Where monks or nuns slept.
What was the farm?
Where crops and vegetables where grown and cattle grazed.
What was the bridge gate?
This allowed the monks or nuns to cross the river and enter the abbey.

Where the monks or nuns went to pray and where mass was held.

In this place food an clothing would be distributed to poor and needy people, this distribution was known as alms for the poor.

This was a wing that was separated form the main part of the abbey where sick people were taken to get well and stop others becoming ill.

Situated on the river this was used to grind wheat into flour, it was where grain is milled into flour.
What was the refectory?
The dining hall of the monastery.

The toilet
