An action that causes suffering or injury to others, generally because of their beliefs.
What is a martyr?
A martyr is a person who is prepared to stand up for their beliefs even when this may result in suffering or death.
What was Paul’s name before he was converted?
Saul of Tarsus

On the road road to Damascus.
Who did Saul oversee the stoning of?
Saint Stephen
How many journeys did Paul go on?
3, the purpose of these journeys was to educate people about the new faith and to support those who had converted.
Where was Paul martyred?
In Rome, by emperor Nero.
When did Paul die?
64AD
Who started the persecution of the Christians and why?
Emperor Nero, he blamed them for a fire that had engulfed the city of Rome. He launched a fierce persecution of Christians, it was during this time that both St Peter and St Paul where martyred.
When was the destruction of the temple of Jerusalem?
70 AD. After being persecuted by the Romans the Jews had been in an open revolt against roman rule, the Romans destroyed the city of Jerusalem and the temple inside.
Where did the first Christians meet?
The met regularly at pirate houses and were also baptised there as meeting in public was too dangerous.
What did the early Christians do?
They deepened their understanding of their faith and wrote down the story of Jesus’ life. The gospels were written and the letters of St Paul were collected.
