The Media - The New Media Flashcards
Cornford and Robbins (1999) - evolutionary
New media is evolutionary not revolutionary.
Evolved from technology that already exists e.g phone line to access internet
Interactivity isn’t exclusive to new media e.g columns in newspapers for people to share views
Speed of communication is only new development.
Boyle and Haynes (2004) - Digital convergence
Convergence/ integration was evolutionary process.
Digitalisation allows for media to be delivered across a range of platforms which would previously have been separated or unconnected, instead of replacing traditional options
Curran and Seaton (2003) - Cultural Pessimists
Cultural Pessimists (-):
- new media controlled by multinational corporations
- increasing globalisation means far reaching influence over consumers
- under state control
- consumer benefits come at social cost e.g online shopping
- greater freedom of harmful information
Curran and Seaton (2003) - Neophiliacs
Neophiliacs (+):
- increased consumer choice
- greater democratic society as greater share of information/ views
- development of shared culture from global media phenomena’s
Andrew Keen (2007) (Cultural Pessimist) - Quality of media content
- democratic nature of internet damages quality
- crowd produced/ democratic media e.g Wikipedia replace traditional, professional material
