Q

What is the primary thing the L brain hemisphere is good for? What are some potential pitfalls of this?

A

Manipulating the world

This locks one into being more certain in things than reality entails, being too narrowly focused and myopic, and being concerned with what it finds to be the ultimate truth

Q

What’s an example of an outcome in history where a L brain dominated thought process led to unwanted circumstances? How did this work out?

A

The financial collapse in the 2000’s. The algorithms that were established fooled folks at banks into thinking they could predict the outcomes of their actions, and the effect was catastrophic for the entire economy. This irrational certainty led to a separation from what would actually happen in the real world

Q

How does the L brain interpret trust and what does it do with this belief?

A

The L brain doesn’t trust much, therefore it attempts to micro control what happens to the person.

Q

How does a L brain centric view affect one’s ability to understand things in the world? How might this show?

A

The L brain convinces one that manipulation and processing is more important than understanding and meaning.

This would lead someone to seek objectifying things and using them for whatever gain they can get, rather than truly understanding something, which likely will be more beneficial for that person in the first place.

Q

How has a L brain centric view affected happiness in today’s world?

A

Although access to material things is at an all time high, happiness is low, indicating that objectification doesn’t lead to an ultimate form of happiness. As people’s thinking becomes more and more narrow, their ability to find happiness shrinks as well.

Q

What might be a factor that contributes to the L hemisphere’s dominance in seeing the world? How has Allah provided a cure against that, almost as if Allah knew this COULD happen and so he protected his creations from it?

A

A lack of safety may make one seek to control and manipulate, to the point where they are implementing anxiety driving tendencies that further makes their situation worse.

Allah’s name brings with it protection, a sense of safety, which should calm the L brain and prevent it from becoming the dominating contributor to reality interpretation. Knowing that one is protected by Allah inhibits the L brain’s irrational rationality, but only under conditions where one is able to experience that safety. They need worldly experiences that serve as references to attach Allah’s name to.

Q

What are 3 reasons the L brain has become successful in dominating our interpretation of the world?

What external image in the world can reflect how the L brain works?

A
  1. The L brain gives people feelings of power, which is seductive and illusory to what brings one’s wellbeing. It provides people with a false sense of safety.
  2. It establishes simplicity, which fools people into thinking they know things. This reminds me of Jeff speaking to his golf coach about his R side not loading, after he and I briefly talked about it. He fooled himself into thinking he knew what he was talking about in order to control the situation with Ryan, was this his means for establishing safety?
  3. The political media controls the news to the people, and its view is L brain centric. It conveys to people what it believes to be true (Fox, CNN) and it constructs arguments to get people to believe those things.

What the industrial revolution brought along provides a nice image of how the L brain likes to work. Systematic, structured, routine, predictable.

Q

Which brain hemisphere values happiness and pleasure? Why is the pursuit of these an empty endeavor?

A

The L brain hemisphere. True happiness however cannot be sought, because it is a byproduct of something bigger. True happiness comes from understanding things and finding their true meaning, not just their utility.

Q

Where does each brain hemisphere direct its attention? How has this affected one’s ability to interpret meaning from the world?

A

The R hemisphere’s attention is directed outwards to the world, while the L is directed inwards.

This causes one to extract meaning from their life events in different ways, and the utility of meaning comes from being in the world, rather than solely abstracting individually about it

Q

What is one of the challenges of the L hemisphere in regards to outlook/vision?

A

The L hemisphere’s vision is limited, and more concerningly so, it is not aware of that and therefore remains fixed within its micromanagement

Q

How does the understanding of the language production apparatus in humans help us better understanding the purpose of language?

A

The language producing structures in humans consists of the L brain, but also the tongue, larynx and muscles of respiratory control. This allows one not only to speak BUT ALSO SING, which has been believed by anthropologists to be the reason humans have language.

This indicates that language isn’t just used for communication of words, but in particular, a certain way of expressing words (intonation, speed)

13
Q

How do the 2 kinds of language differentiate from each other and what utility do they offer humans?

A

Denotative language is different from expressive language. One provides explicit and straight forward communication, while the other provides ambiguity and more opportunity for interpretation.

Q

How does attention contribute to a human’s function in the world?

A

It determines not just the kind of relationships one has with the world, but also what it is that people come to have a relationship with.

Q

Does attention vary across hemisphere and if so, how and what utility does this have to a human?

How is this example seen in birds and their utility?

A

Yes. The LH specializes in narrow and focused attention, while the R hemisphere focuses on broad and open attention. This leads to humans having different relationships in how they attend.

A LH attentional approach produces seeking to find what can be made use of, which limits the relationship one has with something to its utility for the individual. A RH attentional approach encourages seeking connection with other, rather than utility.

17
Q

What are the 2 roles of the corpus collosum, and which role is more necessary? How does this influence the master and his emissary?

A

Connection and Inhibition, keep things separate. Inhibition is the more needed role

The CC allows the master to remain in charge by inhibiting excessive contribution from the emissary. This prevents the L hemisphere from dominating one’s world view, and creating a fixed understanding of things and the illusion of certainty

18
Q

How would another person/object be viewed through the lens of a LH view vs a RH view?

A

How can I make use of it vs how do I connect to it

19
Q

Why does a competition form between the L and RH?

A

The left hemisphere believes that it knows everything, and it doesn’t realize that it does not know what the RH knows

20
Q

Why would 2 people looking at the same thing have different interpretations of it?

A

The hemisphere one is biased towards governs what kind of attention they bring to the world, which governs what they see and interpret. Ex- someone may look at a table and see the dirt marks on it, vs another person may see how much space is available and consider what kind of things can be placed on it

21
Q

How does the R hemisphere vary from the L is all social mammals?

A

It is longer, heavier, and larger than the L

22
Q

How does our brain register new experiences, such as music, words, objects and skills?

How does this apply to your stressful experiences when it comes to studying?

A

An experience is first registered by the R brain, and it is only until that experience is familiar that the L brain then begins to register it.

This means when I study, I shouldn’t worry initially about whether or not I understand all the details, because the information has yet to actually be sent over to the L hemisphere

23
Q

How does the interpretation of time vary across each hemisphere?

A

The RH interprets time as a wholeness of a flowing structure that changes overtime. The LH interprets time as still framed experience in succession, similar to what you’d see in a flip book.

24
Q

Most of our emotional life tends to be experienced by the R hemisphere, however one emotion is felt more in the L. What emotion is that?

What did you also find interesting about the LH in regards to emotions?

A

Anger

The LH is also responsible for conscious, superficial or willed emotions

25
Q

How does one establish meaning in things, and what brain hemisphere does this correlate to?

A

Meaning is established through engagement with the world, not from self contemplation, although both support one another.

26
Q

What is one of the largest reflections of a L hemisphere centric view of the world?

A

Reliance on the explicit, rather than the implicit. This biases folks to resist uncertainty and migrate towards that which is “certain”, but potentially illusory as well

27
Q

What does the L brain need to be reminded of in order to prevent it from becoming the dominating hemisphere?

A

That it needs the R hemisphere in order to make sense of things, and without it is getting a less accurate interpretation of events/reality
