The Mass Spectrometer Flashcards
1
Q
What is determined by the mass spectrometer?
A
Relative masses of atoms
2
Q
How does it works? List out the processes.
A
- vapourisation of the sample
- bombarded by the high energy electrons = positive ion
- accelerated by an electric field
- deflected by the magnetic field
- ions detected
- vacuum is maintained to avoid air particles hindering the movement of ions.
3
Q
What is a mass spectrum?
A
Plot of relative abundance against m/e
4
Q
How do you know the number of isotopes present and the isotopic mass?
A
From the number of peaks or lines and from the m/e value of each peak
5
Q
How to know the relative abundance?
A
From the height of each peak
