- vapourisation of the sample
- bombarded by the high energy electrons = positive ion
- accelerated by an electric field
- deflected by the magnetic field
- ions detected
- vacuum is maintained to avoid air particles hindering the movement of ions.

From the number of peaks or lines and from the m/e value of each peak
