- military expansion was called for by military leaders and businesses when japan’s industries were wrecked by the depression

A
- Japan had a large army/ navy and had controlled South Manchurian railway territory since 1905
- in sept 1931 it used disturbance as an excuse to capture the town of Mukden, and send troops to take over the rest of Manchuria
- the Japanese pretended to give manchuria independence
- a weak leader was put in charge so that they could control him
- the Lytton report was produced

the effect of the lytton report

- said the japanese had been wrong. the league did nothing about this
- Japan refused to accept it. they left the league in 1933

- the japanese then invaded Jehol in China, on the border of Manchuria
- in 1936 japan signed a treaty with germany
- in 1937 japan invaded china, the league did nothing about it.

how was the league weakened after the manchuria crisis?
A
- they didn’t want to punish japan as it was an important trading partner
- France and Britain were occupied with their own issues like Hitler. They wouldn’t commit money or troops bc of the depression
- showed dictators like Hitler how weak the league was
- everyone saw the league fail to deal with its first real challenge.
