people strive to achieve fairness in their relationship and feel distressed if they perceive unfairness

how does perceived inequity lead to distress?
the greater the perceived inequity, the greater the dissatisfaction, the greater the distress

equality as each partner can contribute different amounts for the relationship to be equitable
