The Lymphatic System Flashcards
Lymphatic vessels
Transport fluid that has escaped the blood system, back into the blood.
Lymphoid organs
House phagocytes and lymphocytes.
What direction does lymph flow?
Toward the heart.
What are the 2 “semi-independent” parts of the Lymphatic System?
- Lymphatic vessels
2. Lymphoid tissues and organs
What are lymphatic vessels lined with?
Endothelial cell, smooth muscle and adventitia (CT).
Lymph capillaries
Absorb leaked fluid.
What is the purpose of the “mini valves” in the lymph vessels?
To open when fluid pressure is higher in the interstitial space, and shut when pressure in the vessel is high, to prevent lymph from leaking back out.
What makes up 40% of the equine lymph vessel walls?
Elastin.
Where are lymph node clusters found?
In the axillary, inguinal, and cervical regions.
Lymph nodes
Filter lymph, macrophages and lymphocytes fight foreign substances before the lymph exits the nodes.
Where does lymph enter and exit the node?
Lymph enters rough afferent vessels and exits through efferent vessels.
*there are more afferent than efferent.
What are the 5 lymphoid organs?
- Bone marrow
- Thymus
- Tonsils
- Peyers patches
- Spleen
Spleen
Filters blood.
Returns worn out RBC’s to the liver.
Blood reservoir.
Stores platelets.
Peyers patches
In the small intestine
MALT - Mucosal Associated Lymphoid Tissue
*GALT - Gut Associated Lymphoid Tissue
Bone marrow
Made up of CT fibres, fat cells, blood vessels, and blood producing cells. T and B lymphocytes are made in bone marrow.
