The Lymphatic System Flashcards
What does the spleen do?
Stores and filters red blood cells.
Old red blood cells are broken down here.
(Fun fact: It is the largest organ of the lymphatic system)
What do tonsils and adenoids do?
Help prevent pathogens entering the body via mouth. (located at the back of the oral cavity?
What does the Thymus do?
T lymphocytes mature here. It’s important in young animals.
What does Bone marrow do?
Produces Leukocytes and erythrocytes and platelets.
What does the lymph nodes do?
Filter out pathogens and foreign bodies to aid immune system.
They also house/supply lymphocytes
What is the lymphatic system? (protection)
A group of organs, vessels and tissues that protect you from infection.
It keeps a healthy balance of fluid in the body.
What are the 4 main functions of the lymphatic system?
-Drain excess fluid: Return leaked fluid back into the C. system.
-Aid the immune system: lymph collecting foreign particles + getting filtered out by lymph nodes.
-Absorb nutrients: Collects products of fat digestion from small intestines.
-Transport: Water, cells, immune response and waste materials.
What is lymph?
It is the fluid that flows through your lymphatic system.
(Fun fact: A blister is the build up of lymph under the skin)
What do lymph vessels do?
Transport EXCESS fluid (lymph) around the body.
What do lymph vessels have and why is the reason for that?
Valves to stop back flow because the vessels have a low pressure.
Where does the right lymphatic duct drain? fab scanks heading now
Right forelimb
Right shoulder
Right side of the head and neck
Where does the Left lymphatic duct drain?
The rest of the body.
(movement by skeletal muscles)
What do lymph ducts do?
Take filtered lymph and drains it back into C. system.
Lymph nodes: What do crossroads do?
Filter foreign particles and pathogens for the immune system.
Where are nodes found?
Where lymphatic vessels join.
Lymph Node: What does the afferent do?
ARRIVES.
Lymph Node: What does the Efferent do?
EXSITS.
What things start life in the bone marrow?
B lymphocytes and immature
T lymphocytes.
What happens in the lymphatic system and the C. System? (CYCLE)
-Blood capillaries leak fluid.
-Leaked fluid makes up interstitial fluid.
-Fluid taken up by lymph vessels.
-Lymph filtered by nodes to remove pathogens
-Lymph ducts put fluid back into system.
What are B lymphocytes?
They originate in bone marrow and
Make antibodies which attach to bacteria and viruses.
What are T lymphocytes?
KILLER cells.
Destroy pathogens and aberrant cells.
What are phagocytes? (phagocytosis)
Engulf diseases.
(Lymph nodes, bone marrow, spleen and liver)
What is Monocytes?
BLOOD
What is Macrophages?
TISSUES
