Who were the luddites?
They were people who broke machinery in the wool and cotton industries.
Who supposedly lead the luddites?
General Ned Luda or king ludd, he was a mythical figure who lived in Sherwood Forest. The movement was named after him.
Where & when did they begin?
The Luddites began in Nottinghamshire in 1811
Why did the luddites want to break machinery?
It was causing unemployment among workers. They protested against wage reduction.
What’s wage reductions?
Normally craftspeople would do there work for a set price, the usual price. The new system was doing work for what it was worth
What was the luddites main tactic?
Was to warn the masters to remove the frames from their premise, if they refused, the luddites smashes the machines during the night.
Did Luddism become a crime punishable by death?
Yes
