The Limbic System Flashcards
The limbic System
Neural circuits that are crucial to learning, memory and emotional control
Hippocampus
Forming new memories of events and information
Thalamus
Processes and distributes all sensory and motor information to and from the cerebral cortex (except smell)
Regulates awareness and the emotional aspects of sensation
Hypothalamus
- regulates to autonomic nervous systems, sleep cycles and influence pituitary gland secretions
- survival behaviors (eating, fear, aggression)
Amygdala
Involved in emotional responses, learning and forming memories
Gender differences in 🧠 structure
- men have larger skulls/larger 🧠
- females have higher concentration of gray to white matter
- gray/white matters is equally distributed in female 🧠
- males have higher concentration of gray matter in left hemisphere
- males 🧠 are asymmetrical and function more laterally
- women use both hemispheres to process language/males use only left
Males rely on right hemisphere for verbal and spatial tasks
What parts of the 🧠 are responsible for language?
Broca’s and Wernicke’s Areas; both located in the left hemisphere
Lateralization of Function
Implies that one hemisphere of the brain exerts more control over a particular psychological function than the other
