The Biology Of The Brain Flashcards
Motor Neurons
Communicate information to the muscles and glands of the body
Sensory Neurons
Conveys environmental information to the brain from receptor cells in sense organs
Interneurons
Communicate information between neurons
Excitatory Neurons
Messages from presynaptic neurons that increase the likelihood of the postsynaptic neuron activating and generating action potential
Inhibitory Neurons
Messages from presynaptic neurons that decrease the likelihood of the post synaptic neuron activating and generating action potential
Glial Cells
Provide structural support along the nervous system
Microglia
Removes wastes from the nervous system
Astrocytes
Provides connections between neurons and blood vessels
Oligodendrocytes & Schwann Cells
Glial Cells that form the myelin sheath
Myelin Sheath
Fatty covering that’s wrapped around the axons of some neurons
Cell Body
Provides the neuron with energy and contains the cells DNA
Stimulus Threshold
The minimum level of stimulation that a neuron needs to be activated
Polarization
While waiting for activation the electrical charge on the interior of the neuron differs from that of the interior, due to different concentrations of sodium and potassium ions
Synaptic Vessels
Tiny sacs floating in the interior fluid of the axon terminal; contains neurotransmitters
Synapse
The communication junction between two neurons
