What is the constitution of India?
The constitution of India is a very important compilation of procedures and rules governing issues which concern the common people of the country.
What are the organs of the government ?
There are three main organs of the government:-
• legislature - the law-making body
• executive - the body that implements the laws and runs the government
• judiciary - protects the laws and ensure that the citizens get justice.
What are the three legislative lists?
The three legislative lists are :-
• union list - contains matters over which only the centre can make laws.
• state list - contains matters over which only the states can make laws.
• concurrent list - contains matters which both the centre and the states can make laws.
Composition of the legislature:-
The union legislature, also called the parliament which is responsible for making laws in the country consists of two house :- (i) lok sabha and (ii) Rajya sabha.
Lok sabha
Lok sabha or the house of the people is the lower house of the parliament. The maximum strength of the lol sabha may be 552 members, out of which 530 can be directly elected by the people of different states and less than 20 people are elected from the union territories.
The qualifications required to be a member of the state legislature are?
- to become an MP or MLA, a person must be a citizen of india and should be a registered voter and mentally sound.
- to become a member of the lol sabha or the state
legislative assembly, he/she must be atleast 25 years of age - the candidate cannot be a member of rajya sabha or any other legislature at the same time.

What is secret ballot? What is done by it?
A system of voting where only the voter knows who he has voted for. Voting is done by secret ballot.
Who is the speaker?
The speaker is the presiding officer of the lok sabha who maintains order within the house and supervises the work of the house.
Rajya sabha
Rajya sabha or the upper house of the parliament consists of members representing the states of India. It is a permanent body and cannot be dissolved. The maximum strength is 250 members.
Tenure and eligibility of rajya sabha
Rajya sabha members are elected for a period of six years, and one third of its members retire every two years and their place is taken by newly elected members. The minimum age is 30 years.
