What was the League of Nations?
The League of Nations was an organisation that prevented war by establishing a world parliament.
What is collective security?
Collective security is when all members of the League of Nations could expect to be secure because other members would defend them from any attack.
What is covenant?
Covenant are the rules established by all the members.
What were the aims of the league?
- To discourage aggression from any nation.
- To encourage countries to co-operate, especially in business/trade.
- To encourage all nations to disarm.
- To improve the living and working of people in all parts of the world.
In what year did Germany join the League of Nations?
Germany joined the League of Nations in 1926.
Why did the USA not join the LoN?
USA didn’t join the League of Nations as it was supposed to enforce the Treaty of Versailles, and they were against it. As well, they didn’t like the idea of having to pay taxes.
Why did disarmament fail?
Disarmament failed as a long war recently took place, and countries distrusted former enemies.
Who was Georges Clemenceau?
Georges Clemenceau was the Prime Minister of France during the World War One.
Who was Woodrow Wilson?
Woodrow Wilson was the president of The USA from 1913 to 1921.
Who was David Lloyd George?
David Lloyd George was the Prime Minister of Great Britain from 1916 to 1922.
What was the main aim of France?
France wanted revenge from WWI and make Germany weak to prevent attacks in the future.
What was the main aim of USA?
Create the League of Nations to gain peace in the whole world.
What was Britain’s main aim?
Fulfil promises of land to Italy and Japan, and Germany to pay the damage caused.
What was one of the main decisions made by the LoN to avoid any conflict?
One of the League of Nations main actions to avoid conflict was to encourage disarmament.

The Alan’s Island belonged to Finland but most islanders wanted to be ruled by Sweden. They asked the League Council to decide, and they decided that Finland should have them as long as no weapons were kept there. Both sides accepted the decision which is still in force today.

The LoN succeed three times and failed three times to make two countries reach an agreement between border disputes.

-The LoN creates a document called the ‘Nansen Passport’. This made it much easier for genuine refugees to travel across borders.

What would happen if any member of the League quarrelled with another member?
If any member of the League quarrelled with another member, they would talk about it instead of going into war. The talks would take place in the League’s Assembly in Geneva, a sort of world parliament which met once a year.
What did the Health Organisation do?
The Health Organisation worked to improve the world health e.g trying to wipe out leprosy.
What did the International Labour Organisation do?
They aimed to improve the conditions in which people worked.
