The leaf and photosynthesis Flashcards
Leaves are broad and flat
giving a large surface area to absorb as much light as possible
Leaves are thin
providing a short diffusion pathway for carbon dioxide to diffuse to the mesophyll and palisade layer
Leaf cells contain chlorophyll
which absorb energy from different parts of the spectrum
Palisade layer are tightly packed
fit more cells in
Veins contain vascular bundles
these form a network of veins that support the leaf blade. they also carry water from the root to the leaf and carry soluble sugars away.
Plenty stomata pores in lower epidermis
which allow carbon dioxide in and oxygen out. guard cells control whether the are open or closed
Palisade layer contains most chloroplasts
receives the most light
Air spaces in spongy mesophyll layer
to allow carbon dioxide to diffuse from the stomata to the palisade cells
Air spaces give larger surface area to volume ratio
allows maximum absorption of gases
Colour of epidermis
transparent
