Photosynthesis Flashcards
1
Q
What do plants take in
A
- carbon dioxide from the air through pores called stomata
- water from the soil through root hairs
2
Q
Equation for photosynthesis
A
carbon dioxide + water = glucose + oxygen
6CO^2 + 6H^20 = C^6H^12O^6 + 60^2
3
Q
Substance used to help photosynthesis
A
chlorophyll
4
Q
What do plants make in photosynthesis
A
- FOOD: this is glucose, a carbohydrate. Some is used for respiration in cells. The rest in converted to other substances and stored in the plant
- OXYGEN: this is a waste gas. Some is used for respiration in the plant’s cells. The rest is given off through the stomata into the plant’s surroundings.
5
Q
What can glucose be converted into
A
- Sucrose: stored in fruit
- Fats and Oils: food store and growth
- Proteins: for growth and repair
- Cellulose: to form cell walls
- Starch: food store
6
Q
How is glucose stored
A
- starch can be converted back into glucose for respiration in plant cells
- starch is insoluble and so will not dissolve in water and flow out of the cells where it is stored
- starch does not affect the water concentration inside the cells
7
Q
Photosynthesis in DAYTIME
A
- Plants photosynthesis at a faster rate than they respire
- Take in more CO^2
- Release extra 0^2
8
Q
Photosynthesis in NIGHTTIME
A
- Plants respire but do not photosynthesis
- Take in 0^2
- Release waste C0^2
