The Layers of the Earth Flashcards
Where does volcanoes’ magma come from?
The inner parts of the earth
What is the Earth’s crust?
A thin layer of solid rock
What is oceanic crust?
The crust when it is under the ocean
What is continental crust?
The crust you see on land
What happens to temperature and pressure as you get closer to the core?
They both increase.
What are convection currents in relation to magma?
They are applied to the magma, causing hot rocks to rise and cool rocks to descend
What forms a convection current in the mantle?
The melting of rock and the movement of hot and cool rocks
What causes earthquakes?
Tectonic plates sliding against each other
What is the first layer?
The Crust
What is the second layer?
The Mantle
What is the third layer?
The Outer Core
What is the fourth layer?
The Inner Core
What form is the crust?
The crust is a solid
what form is the mantle
The mantle is a solid
What form is the outer core
The Outer core is a liquid
What is the form of the Inner core?
Solid
What is the temperature range of the crust?
200 - 1000 degrees celcius
what is the temperature range of the mantle?
932 - 4000 degrees celcius
What is the temperature range of the outer core?
4030 - 5730 degrees celcius
What is the temperature of the Inner core?
5, 500 degrees celcius
How long is the mantle?
2660 km
How long is the inner core?
1220 km
How long is the outer core?
2180 km
