The Lathe: Turning operations on the lathe Flashcards
Explain turning
The tool moves parallel to the axis of the work
Explain facing
The tool moves at right angles to the axis of the work
Explain form turning
The tool is ground to the shape required.
It is fed directly into the work and the profile or shape of the tool is produced on the work.
Explain drilling/reaming
The drill or reamer is held in the tailstock and feed is obtained by turning the tailstock handwheel
Explain parting-off
The cross slide is used to feed a narrow tool into the work.
The tool is fed through to the centre of the work.
The tool is kept as narrow as possible to reduce waste.
Explain boring
The tool is held in a bar which can fit into a hole drilled in the work.
The boring bar produces an accurate internal diameter.
Explain taper turning
The tool moves at an angle to the work axis
Explain knurling
The wheels of the knurling tool are pressed into the slide.
The teeth on the wheels form the knurl.
