Milling Flashcards
how is the main spindle mounted on a horizontal milling machine?
The main spindle is mounted horizontally near the top of the column.
How is the machine capacity determined on the horizontal milling machine?
The machine capacity is determined by the maximum distance from the table to the spindle as well as working surface size and travel in all directions.
Why do the milling cutters have a hole in them on the horizontal milling machine?
The milling cutters have a hole in them in order to be mounted on an arbour.
Describe the cutters on a horizontal milling machine
The cutters are usually large in diameter and are found in a range of types including slab, side and face, saw, angle and form cutters.
How are the spindle and milling cutters mounted on the vertical milling machine?
The spindle is mounted vertically in a head at the top of the column. The milling cutters are generally mounted in a chuck.
List the range of end mills, slot drills and profiled cutters
There are a range of end mills, slot drills and profiled cutters (angle, ball-nose, dovetail, tee-slot, corner-rounding, etc…)
Explain plain milling and what types of milling machines it can be carried out on
Plain milling is the milling of a flat surface with the axis of the cutter parallel to the machining surface.
It can be carried out either on a horizontal machine or a vertical machine
Explain end milling
End Milling is the milling of a flat surface with the axis of the cutter perpendicular to the machining surface
Explain gang milling
Gang milling is a horizontal milling operation that utilises three or more milling cutters grouped together for the milling of a complex surface in one pass.
Explain straddle milling
In straddle milling, a group of spacers is mounted in between two side and face milling cutters on the spindle arbor as shown.
Explain up-cut milling
Why is it conventionally used in most milling operations?
In up cut milling, the cutter rotates in a direction opposite to the table feed.
It is conventionally used in most milling operations because the backlash between the leadscrew and the nut of the machine table can be eliminated.
Explain down cut milling
What is it also known as?
What machines can it be used on?
What are the pros of this process?
In down cut milling, the cutter rotates in the same direction as the table feed.
This method is also known as Climb Millingcan only be used on machines equipped with a backlash eliminator or on a CNC milling machine.
This method, when properly treated, will require less power in feeding the table and give a better surface finish on the workpiece
What is slab milling?
For heavy cutting of large and flat surfaces. Cutter is mounted on an arbour
Done on horizontal Milling Machine
Explain an end mill cutter
End Mill–
(4 cutting edges) Used for standing milling –cannot drill holes in workpiece as the cutting edges don’t meet at the tip
Explain what a slot drill does
Slot Drill–
(2 cutting edges) Used for standard milling and can also drill holes and take out closed slots as cutting edges meet at the tip
