The Knee & Popliteal Fossa Flashcards
Patella
- Located at the front of the knee joint
- Knee cap
- sesamoid bone
Medial facet
Articulates with the medial condyle of the femur
Lateral facet
Articulates with the lateral condyle of the femur
Functions of the patella
Leg extension and protection
Patellar Dislocation
- displacement of the patella out of the patellofemoral groove
- laterally
- high force impact
- sudden twist of the knee
- football, rugby and ice hockey
Patellar Fracture
- direct trauma
- sudden contraction of the quadriceps muscles
Which of the following attaches to the base of the patella?
Quadriceps tendon
Which of the following attaches to the apex of the patella?
Patellar Ligament
In what direction is the patella most likely to dislocate?
Laterally
What type of joint is the knee joint ?
synovial type
Tibiofemoral
The medial and lateral condyles of the femur articulating with the tibia.
Patellofemoral
The anterior and distal part of the femur articulating with the patella.
what is the weight bearing joint of the knee?
tibifemoral
Blood supply to the knee
Genicular anastomoses around the knee
Medial Meniscus
- fixed to the tibial collateral ligament
- damage to the TCL results in tearing
Lateral and medial Meniscus
- fibrocartilage structures
- deepens the articular surface of the tibia
- acts as shock absorbers
- c-shaped
Suprapatella bursa
Prepatella bursa – Found between the apex of the patella and the skin.
– This is an extension of the synovial cavity of the knee, located between the quadriceps femoris and the femur.
Prepatella bursa
– Found between the apex of the patella and the skin
Infrapatella bursa
– Split into deep and superficial. The deep bursa lies between the tibia and the patella ligament. The superficial lies between the patella ligament and the skin.
Semimembranosus bursa
– Located posteriorly in the knee joint, between the semimembranosus muscle and the medial head of the gastrocnemius.
Patellar ligament
Continuation of the quadriceps femoris tendon distal to the patella.
Tibial Collateral Ligament
- found on the medial side of the joint
- attaches to the medial epicondyle of the femur
- attaches distally to the medial surface of the tibia
