The Knee Flashcards
2 functions of the meniscus
Force transmission
Stability - deepens the tibial articular surface
Composition
Fibroelastic cartilage
Which meniscus is c-shaped and which more circular?
Medial - c shaped
Lateral - circular - covers a larger proportion of the articular surface
Blood supply to the meniscus
Lateral and medial inferior geniculate arteries
Attachments of the medial meniscus? Why is it more prone to damage than lateral meniscus?
Anteriorly and posteriorly to tibial surface. Anterior part is congruent with the ACL.
MCL/joint capsule at lateral border
More prone to damage as it has more attachments making it relatively immobile.
Lateral meniscus attachment sites?
Not attached to the joint capsule!
Only attached posteriorly and anteriorly
A # on which side of the tibial plateau is more likely to cause arthritis?
Medial - covers less of the joint surface
Name the two meniscofemoral ligaments. Which side are they on?
Humphrey (Anterior horn)
Wrisberg (Posterior horn)
Lateral side
