The kidneys Flashcards
What is the ureter
it is the tube that passes urine from the kidney to the bladder
what is the job of the renal artery
brings blood containing urea and other substances in solution to the kidney
what is the job of the renal vein
carries blood away from the kidney after urea and other substances have been removed from the blood by the kidney
what is the urethra
tube through which urine passes to the outside of your body
what is the job of the bladder
it stores urine
what is inside of the cortex of the kidney
very dark red, lots of capilliries
what does the medulla contain
it contains the loops of henle from the nephrons
what do the pyramids contain within the kidney
tubules, collecting ducts, blood vessels
why is there more pressure in the afferent arteriole than the efferent arteriole
because the lumen in the afferent arteriole is bigger which brings in more blood than blood that can leave
what does the kidney need it self
oxygen, glucose,
what is there less of in the renal vein after the blood has been filtered
less urea and toxins, less oxygen, more carbon dioxide, less salts and ions, less water, less glucose
there are two types of processes in the nephron
ultrafiltration and selective reabsorbtion.
what is ultrafiltration
it is the filtering out of all molecules small enough to pass through
what molecules are unable to pass through ultrafiltration
WBC, RBC, platelets, proteins
what is selective reabsorption
bringing glucose, amino acids back into the blood
what does the collecting duct control inside the nephron
it controls the amount of water being reabsorbed
what hormone is released from the pituitary gland
Anti Dierectic Hormone (ADH)
what does the term negative feedback mean
Mechanism of control - turns off when reaches desired levels
what happens when you dehydrated (hint - remember the osmoregulation cycle)
your release ADH. More water is reabsorbed and less water is lost (less water in the collecting duct and urine dark & concentrated)
what happens when you hydrated (hint - remember the osmoregulation cycle)
when you are hydrated negative feedback kicks in. you stop releasing ADH. less water reabsorbed and more water lost. there is more water in the collecting duct and urine clearer & dilute
