What is the judicial review?
Courts decide arguments about the meaning of law, how they are aloe and whether it violates the constitution
How were federal courts made
Created by congress using the power granted to them by constitution
What does the Supreme Court do?
- decides cases that raise questions of constitutional interpretation
- devices if a law or gov’t action violates constitution
- can invalidate federal/state laws
- decisions of Supreme Court can only be changes by another Supreme Court decision or a constitutional amendment
- is a referee amount various branches of federal / state gov’t
- has limited power over state courts
How does the Supreme Court work?
-Causes brought first in the front or lower courts
- Losing party may appeal the case
- State courts = appellate courts
- Federal courts -
• lower courts = US district courts
• higher courts = US court of appeals
What are the federal courts broken up into?
Lower courts = US district courts
Higher courts = US court of appeals
What are the type of courts?
- US bankruptcy courts
- US court if appeals
- US district courts
- US tax court
What does the US bankruptcy court do?
Special kind of civil cases involving companies or people who can no longer pay their debts.
Congress has established special federal courts called bankruptcy courts to help decide these cases

What types of cases are there?
Criminal

What does the criminal case do?
If a person is accused of a crime is generally charged in form of accusation called indictment.
Don’t prosecuted the cause through US attorney office if person is charged with federal crime.
When court determines an individual committed a crime, person will receive a sentence.
Sentence may be a monetary penalty, Imprisonment, or supervision in the community or some combination
What does the civil case do?
When person or entity, called the plaintiff, claims that another person or entity, called the defendant has failed to carry out legal duty owed to the plaintiff.
Civil suits are brought in both state and federal courts.
