What is the second temple period and how many subsections did it have?
The period when the temple was rebuilt after the return from exile in Babylon
It had 4 periods: Persian, Hellenistic, Hasmonean, and Roman
When did Rome destroy the temple in Jerusalem, and what did that mean for the Jewish people?
Destroyed in 70 A.D.
Destroyed their central place of worship and transitioned Judaism to Synagogue/localized faith; catalyzed the diaspora
What are the differences between the Pharisees and Sadducees?
Pharisees were focused on the enforcement and upholding of Jewish law and debating it and interpreting it
Sadducees were focused on the priesthood and temple life and the high office and responsibility that came from it
Who were the Essenes and what critical gift did they offer to the early church?
They were a sect of Judaism that split off and they preserved the biblical canon
Who are the Samaritans and why was there conflict with the Jewish people?
Claim legitimacy as God’s chosen people
Jews said the place to worship was Jerusalem, Samaritans disagreed

People who weren’t Jews
