How is John unique compared to the other gospels?
It is not a synoptic gospel
Covers a different time span that the others
Longer teaching and less miracles; more divine than the others

What is John’s main focus?
Provoke faith in Jesus, the Messiah and Son of God
Give an example of one of John’s literary techniques that uses inside language
The misunderstanding motifs that you have to dig deeper to understand the meaning; it may be confusing at first but you have to work hard in order to find out what the message is really trying to say
Who might the “beloved disciple” be? Explain why some scholars identify this figure with the apostle John and why other scholars think that identification is unlikely
Case for John
It is the disciple who asks Jesus who will betray him at The Last Supper
Referenced his presence in the crucifixion scene as the beloved disciple
In the gospel’s last chapter, it mentions that it was written by the disciple that Jesus loved
Case Against John
Could be Lazarus, Mark or Thomas
Could be symbolic, more of an ideal to be reached rather than a real person

Jesus tries to explain heavenly things that cannot be comprehended in human language
So hard to fit into human language that he has to use stories to try and explain who he is
“I AM” Sayings
Only God gets to say I AM, which points to Jesus divinity when he says these statements

The Holy Spirit as a comforter and a helper
Will teach them what they need to know
Incarnation
Jesus is the only one who can make God known
He tells and shows who God is
He achieves reunion with God through his death
