Better than other non-Europeans, as they lived in diving communities where Japanese, Chinese and Malay people were the majority, and Europeans were the minority. They still did not receive very good pay.
What were “White Australian’s” attitudes towards the Japanese?
The same as towards other non-Europeans, however the Japanese usually lived in primarily Japanese communities, and did not receive as much day-to-day discrimination as the Chinese.
How are the Japanese remembered today?
Important to Australia’s history. Around 700 Japanese divers’ graves in the Japanese graveyard in Broome.
