What happened in 1800?
An act of Union abolished the Irish Parliament and became the United Kingdom Of Great Britain and Ireland
What were the religious differences between Ireland and England?
England was predominantly Protestant, but Ireland were largely Catholic, except in the 6 counties of Ulster in the North East of Ireland
How did religious differences between Ireland and England impact politics?
Their different religious views would mean their political intentions will have clashed as government was run off beliefs
When was the potato famine?
1845-51
What was the potato famine?
Ireland’s heavily relied on potato crop failed in the 1840s, 1 million died of starvation and 2 million emigrated. This caused a huge amount of resentment towards the British government due to their failure to support the people of Ireland.
What was the issue of tenancy and absentee landowners?
British landowners would live elsewhere whilst Irish farmers rented the land. However the tenancies were were often unstable and the Irish farmers had few rights, that were still taken advantage of.
What was Lord Salisbury’s view on the tenancy issues?
Lord Salisbury aimed to ‘kill home rule with kindness’ by giving tenants the opportunity to take out loans to buy out their landlords. However, the demand for home rule was still prevelant.
