Balfour's Government Flashcards
What was the Education Act of 1902?
The act reorganised education and allowed state provision for secondary schools, as well as stating that voluntary schools would be funded by rate-payers. The act was brought about by the Cockerton judgement of 1901, the legal judgement that declared the London school Board had been misusing its powers.
What was the Licensing Act of 1904?
The Act enabled justices to decided whether or not a liquor licence should be renewed, and allowed for compensation. It was brought about by a court judgement: Sharp v Wakefield that was deemed to be unfair as it did not allow compensation claims.
Why did the Licensing Act of 1904 upset Non-Conformists?
Non-Conformists were unhappy that they would have to pay compensation for a trade they believed to be immoral.
What was the Taff Vale Judgement of 1901?
The judgement threatened the ability of any union to go on strike, as a strike meant that a trade union could be sued by employers for loss of earnings incurred in a strike.
Why did the Taff Vale Judgement of 1901 contribute towards the Conservatives downfall?
The Taff Vale decision was a mistake for the conservatives and was a contributory cause of their downfall as it showed the government were unwilling to take the side of trade unions. This created the idea amongst workers, further promoted by Liberals, that the Conservatives were fundamentally opposed to their interests.
What were the overall negatives of Balfour’s Government?
-The divisions created by tariff reforms
-The poorly treated Chinese immigrants in South Africa
What were the overall positives of Balfour’s Government?
His government had responded to the issues highlighted by the Boer War and had shown itself capable of reform; England’s Navy and Army had been reformed, Britain had moved away from diplomatic isolation and The Unemployed Workmen Act of 1905 was passed. This gave grants to business and local authorities so that they would provide work.
What was Sinn Fein?
Sinn Fein was an Irish republican and democratic socialist political party in both the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland.
What was the Unemployed Workmen Act of 1905?
The act established Distress Committees that gave out single grants to businesses or local authorities that allowed them to hire more workers, decreasing the number of people out of work. It had little effect as it was simply the cumulative effect of 20 years of social inquiry.
