The Iris and Pupil Flashcards
What is inflammation of the iris called?
iritis
Iritis is due to what?
Trauma
Secondary to a disease
idiopathic
Signs of iritis?
Appears red, teary with a constricted, sluggish pupil.
What does the patient report with iritis?
Significant pain and decreased visual acuity
What controls the size of the pupil?
Radial and circular muscles within the iris.
What is the pupil?
The opening to the inner eye
What is PERRLA?
Pupils Equal, Round and Reactive to Light and Accommodation.
What is the direct light reflex?
Normal pupil constricts briskly to a light directed at it from an angle lateral to the patient’s line of gaze.
A sluggish response to the direct light reflex or no response indicates a problem along what?
Neural pathway from sensory receptor –> C.N. 2 –> brain center and back through C.N. 3 –> circular muscles of the iris.
What is consensual (indirect) light reflex?
The contralateral pupil should constrict briskly even though the light is directed at the opposite pupil.
A sluggish or absent response to the consensual (indirect) light reflex indicates a problem along what?
Neural reflex path (sensory receptor –> C.N. 2 –> brain center and back through C.N. 3 —> circular muscles of the iris.
Is the response of the contralateral eye they same?
No, it is less dramatic
What is the accommodation reflex?
Eyes tracking on an object moved from a distant to a near point that should constrict and converge as the object moves closer.
What is another name for the accommodation reflex?
Near point reflex
The eyes tracking during the accommodation reflex should do what?
Constrict and converge
