Structured Interviewing
-interviewer asks all respondents same series of pre-established questions
-must read the same questions
-same answers in a neutral tone

Unstructured interviewing
-What we conducted in our own study
1) accessing the setting
2) understanding language /culture of respondents

Group interviews
-between formal and informal interviewing
-associated with marketing research (focus group)
-Different forms depending on on their purposes
-compared on several dimensions

Gendered Interviewing (male based)

Multicultural interviewing
-feminist criticism opened door to other challenges
-“non mainstream”
-social and historical experiences mediate

Social intelligence (emotional)
A) Proxemic
aka proxemity
-nonverbal communication or body language in which messages are conveyed from one person to another by the changing space that separates them during a conversation
- ex; backing away from someone when personal space is invaded
- or getting close when sharing secret
B) Paralanguage
-The ways in which ppl show what they mean other than by the words they use
-ex; tone of voice, sounds with breath (sighing), pitch,
C) Touching
-physical touch
D) facial gestures
-face movements
E) Kinesics (body language)
-study of hand, arm, body and face movements
-ex; gestures, facial expressions, rubbing of hands
