The Interior Design Process Flashcards
What a design process must reflect?
The Scope of Services agreed to with the client
What is a design process composed of?
It defines the typical steps in completing a project
What are the 5 phases of the Design Process by most books?
Programming Schematic Design Design Development Contract Documentation Contract Administration
What are the 9 phases of the Design Process according to ARIDO?
Project Start-up Needs, Analysis & Programing Schematic Design Design Development Furniture and Equipment Contract Documentation Construction Tender Construction Contract Administration Project Completion
What is done on the Project Start up phase of the Design Process?
Sets the basic organization of a project: define roles and responsibilities, define reporting structure, determine appropriate project team, set meeting dates, get plans of space, set up kick off meeting for the team with the client.
Internal preparation: set up work packages or strategy for profit, set up project accounting and invoicing, conduct an internal team kick-off meeting
What work is included in the Needs Analysis and Programming phase of the Design Process?
Conducting research
Identifying and analyzing the needs and goals of the client and/or occupants of the space
Evaluating existing documentation and conditions
Assessing project limitations and resources
Identifying life safety and code requirements
What are the deliverables of Needs Analysis and Programming phase of the Design Process?
A Program of Space Needs: a document that interprets and organizes the information gathered
What is included in the Program of Space Needs?
A summary of project goal, guiding principles and ‘non-negotiable.
A schedule
A budget
An inventory of existing items to be re-used
A generic layout of proposed standards for furniture
A calculation of square footage requirements (program)
What tools and techniques that can be used to gather information on the Needs Analysis and Programming phase of the Design Process?
Questionnaires and surveys Interviews Focus groups Observation studies On-site sensors Site inspection and measurement (old and new space) Photography or video Research
What is Schematic Design (definition)?
” The graphic layout and presentation of the space planning strategy. A schematic plan outlines the areas and blocks of space including blocking, stacking and adjacencies”
What are the deliverables of Schematic Design Phase?
1-A Schematic Design: usually a floor plan (location of departments or business units, Location of shared facilities, circulation space/traffic flow
2-Written document: updated budget, code compliance review, mechanical/electrical analysis of schematic plan
What are the tools and Techniques used on the Schematic Design Phase?
Adjacency matrix
Bubble diagrams
Block or “block&stack” planning
Foot printing or Master planning (if multiple floors)
What is the definition of Design Development?
“The stage of a project involving space planning and the development of the design concept. This stage outlines the detailed organization of the space and illustrates the end result in terms of the look and feel of the space”
What are the deliverables of the Design Development Phase?
1- Floor plan showing all built elements (walls, doors, glazing, millwork) and generic furniture and equipment
2-Design Development Package - elevations, renderings, perspectives, sample boards and furniture cut-sheets.
3-Written Document- updated budget, updated code compliance review, plan of mechanical/electrical requirements
What are the tools and techniques used in the Design Development phase?
Space Planning and Elevations (AutoCAD, Revit, hand drawn) 3D Renderings Hand-drawn perspective or vignettes 3D fly-throughs Sample Boards Image Boards
