The inspector Flashcards

1
Q

Inspector Goole quote
‘Because what happened to her then..

What structural technique is used here?

A

may have determined what happened to her afterwards, and what happened to her afterwards may have driven her to suicide. A chain of events.

Anadiplosis - beginning a sentence /claude by repeating the last words of the previous sentence/clause.
Links everyone - shows their joint responsibility, showing how content of these statements is connected and lead on from one and another. Promotes heaviness and imprisonment.

Q

How is inspector goole vague?

A

The details on him are limited compared to the description of the Birlings at the start of the play.
Even his dialogue shows what he isn’t rather than what he is. - e.g ‘i don’t play golf’
We learn very little of him, to show him as less of a person and instead of a moral force who mercilessly pursuers the wrongs of the Birlings and gerald to make them admit to their wrongdoings.
Don’t form a personal opinion on him, instead an opinion on his message. ‘We are members on one body, we are responsible for one another’ ‘They will be taught in fire blood and anguish’

What did Priestley want which shows that the inspector is a mouth piece for him?

A

Wanted a social and political shift which took britain forward to a society based on equality and community after the second world war,

A lot of what the inspector says comes straight from Priestley.

If men will not learn that lesson..

A

Then they will be taught in fire and blood and anguish.

Allusion to the biblical reference of hell ‘blazing furnace, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth’

Morality - have to not do this to get into heaven.
Adds to supernatural aspect of inspector goole.
