Setting Flashcards
‘Pink and intimate lighting’
What does this mean?
The birlings see the world through rose tinted glasses, as they don’t have to experience the suffering that the lower class does.
How does the lighting change when the inspector arrives?
Becomes brighter and harder
Interrogation
Harsh revelation of the truth.
‘ All 3 acts take place in the dining room of the birlings house.’
What is the importance of this?
Self absorption - think of nothing outside of their own lives.
Disconnected from the wider world
Create a claustrophobic mood, which is further emphasized when the lighting changes - like a police holding cell.
By never changing the setting, it helps Priestley focus on the main part of the play, the moral lesson.
