the influence of early attachment Flashcards
What is the internal working model?
- the internal working model is an internal template for future relationship that is formed through monotropic attachment.
- Bowlby suggested the type of attachment a person would have during infancy will influence the future behaviours and relationships
- so if a child forms a secure healthy positive attachment with their caregiver they will form healthy positive relationships in the future.
Identify a key study investigating early influences of attachment
Hazan and Shaver love quiz study
outline the aim of Hazan and Shavers study
Aim: To investigate if the attachment type fromed during infancy would influence and have an effect on future adult relationships.
Outline the method of Hazan and Shavers study
Method: - Hazan and shaver published a ‘love quiz’ in an american newspaper and received 620 responses (250 males and 415 females)
- The love quiz was compromised of three sections
- The first section assessed the respondents most important relationship
- The second section assessed the respondents general experiences with love
- the third section asked the respondents their feelings towards certain statements
Outlie the findings of Hazan and Shavers study
Findings: -There was a positive correlation between the attachment types formed during infancy and future experiences with love.
- 56% were classified as having a secure attachment type. These respondents were more likely going to have long lasting relationships that lasted longer than ten years.
- 25% were classified as having a insecure avoidant attachment type. These respondents were more likely going to dislike intimacy in a relationship.
- 19% were classified as having a insecure resistant attachment type. These respondents were more likely going to have short relationships that would last on average six years.
Oultine the conclusion of Hazan and Shavers study
Conclusion: -the attachment types formed during infancy with the primary caregiver will influence future adult relations and our experiences with love as a result of the formation of an internal working model.
